Statement

A studio without walls

"My work happens around moments of connection with nature. It can take place wherever I have a camera or sketchbook. It's about becoming present with fleeting instances of light and line. " - MK

An intimate dialog

My work emerges from time spent in nature, especially in the coastal environments I call home. It is a slow practice of layering visual information in an ongoing dialog with the landscape, an ever unfolding discovery of how deepening observation and awareness shapes our understanding of place. Through detailed sketches, field notes, and photographs, I record the changing forms of waves and clouds, the textures and structures found in natural objects such shells, feathers, and vegetation, and as well as elements of the landscape. These serve as points of departure for the work, which then becomes a blend of observation and expression.

This mindful approach is an opportunity to capture subtle relationships within the environment, revealing connections between human experience and the larger cycles and processes at work in the natural world. Rather than depicting nature as scenery, these works explore it as a dynamic field of relationships in which we are active participants. I invite viewers to engage with the paintings as visual investigations—spaces where perception and place converge, and where familiar elements in nature may be seen from a new perspective.

"I have learned that what I have not drawn I have never really seen, and that when I start drawing an ordinary thing, I realize how extraordinary it is, sheer miracle."

- Frederick Franck
